A New Path Forward: Repealing the Global Gag Rule and Beyond
Today, President Biden took important first steps to dismantle the crippling policies that harmed people’s access to sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion, in the U.S. and globally. White Ribbon Alliance applauds the President for rescinding the expanded global gag rule, which restricts foreign non-governmental organizations that receive U.S. global health funds from using their own resources to engage in abortion-related work.
President Biden also restored funding to the United Nations Population Fund for its critical reproductive and maternal health work around the world, and renounced the Trump administration’s abhorrent Geneva Consensus Declaration. We are encouraged by the President’s moves to expand sexual and reproductive health domestically, by taking strides to strengthen Medicaid and beginning the process to review the harmful domestic gag rule.
As the Biden-Harris administration works to undo damage from the previous administration and rebuild from the devastation of COVID-19, it must take bold action to advance reproductive justice. As Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color and LGBTQ+ people disproportionately bear the brunt of restrictive policies, we must ensure racial equality, sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice are priorities.
That’s why White Ribbon Alliance has joined more than 100 organizations in calling on the Biden-Harris administration and Congress to implement the Blueprint for Reproductive Health, Rights and Justice. The Repro Blueprint is a comprehensive and proactive policy agenda to advance sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice for people in the U.S. and around the world, including through more permanent legislative fixes.
Now is the time to be bold for women and girls everywhere. Join us in raising our voices with the new administration and Congress: women demand better, women deserve better.
