Changemaker:Shahnaz Wazir Ali
I am playing my part for reproductive and maternal healthcare by strongly supporting and actively being engaged in the development of the substantive funded implementation plan as agreed at the provincial and federal levels, focusing on reproductive health care, rights of women, effective service delivery, monitoring, reporting and promoting the use of modern contraceptives.
I helped create an outreach program for Pakistan’s desperate communities in rural and far flung areas—which led to the development of the Lady Health Workers Program of which I was the pioneer.
My name is Shahnaz Wazir Ali and I am an educationist. While working in this field I realized that, considering the human anatomy and biological frame, children can only learn – and can actually maximize their learning potential – only if they are healthy. I started looking for others to connect with to improve children’s health. This led me to the Pakistan Peoples’ Party and my life’s work of improving primary healthcare services in Pakistan, with a focus on the indicators of maternal and infant mortality and nutrition status. I helped create an outreach program for Pakistan’s desperate communities in rural and far flung areas – which led to the development of the Lady Health Workers Program of which I was the pioneer.
White Ribbon Alliance is a true movement. It is not a project. It is not a program. What attracted me to White Ribbon Alliance is the ability to bring all sorts of people together for a common cause: researchers and the technical people, policymakers, specialists. In this way, White Ribbon Alliance is a coalition builder and a good learning platform for new politicians, parliamentarians, ministers and for others who are just finding out about the great need to improve reproductive healthcare here in Pakistan.
What makes White Ribbon Alliance strong is that it is an organization which looks deeply at evidence-based interventions and sees how it can assist a country like Pakistan, which has such enormous challenges. White Ribbon Alliance also brings a lot of knowledge and recognition to those who are creating safe motherhood programs in Pakistan, helping to amplify their work throughout the entire country.
White Ribbon Alliance balances very strong technical analysis and the voices from the community, letting us understand what women want and the challenges they are facing so that we can create change, together.
Thank youShahnaz Wazir Ali
for playing your part.
