White Ribbon Alliance welcomes Comité Por Maternidad Segura Mexico as the newest National Alliance
Washington, DC, July 30, 2020 – White Ribbon Alliance is pleased to officially welcome Safe Motherhood Committee Mexico, known locally as Comité Por Maternidad Segura, or CPMS Mexico, to the Global Alliance as its newest national affiliate. Comprised of 15 National Alliances around the world, White Ribbon Alliance affiliates are united by a shared vision of a world where all girls and women realize their right to quality health and well-being, achieved through its mission to activate a people-led movement for reproductive, maternal and newborn health and rights.
Long a valued partner of White Ribbon Alliance, CPMS Mexico is made up of 64 non-governmental, governmental and academic organizations across the five states of Veracruz, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Jalisco and Guerrero. For more than 28 years, CPMS Mexico has convened their members to promote transparency, accountability and advocate for improved maternal and reproductive health policies and programs. They’ve simultaneously created strategies inform women about their rights and raise awareness among health personnel and communities about the importance of protecting their health and life.
“We’re excited to join the White Ribbon Alliance to strengthen our advocacy and communication strategies in maternal and neonatal health policies, programs and services in Mexico,” said CPMS Mexico National Coordinator, David Melendez Navarro. Navarro leads the National Secretariat along with Alma Ochoa, the Director of Communications.
As a National Affiliate with White Ribbon Alliance, CPMS Mexico will be more closely connected to a network of passionate and skilled advocates around the world for mutual learning and sharing opportunities to strengthen their advocacy, communications, monitoring and fundraising efforts to support midwifery and more broadly advance reproductive and maternal health and rights. Likewise, the Global Alliance will benefit from their unique perspective, extensive experience and leadership in Mexico.
White Ribbon Alliance and CPMS Mexico have a rich history of collaboration. With the support of the MacArthur Foundation, they came together with 21 partners from 2017 to 2018 to convene and advance midwifery efforts between Mexico stakeholders and global stakeholders. The partnership informed Mexico stakeholders on the latest evidence in Midwifery and Maternal Health, amplified midwives’ stories through citizen journalist trainings, and provided learning and sharing opportunities between Mexico stakeholders and WRA alliances. The project helped CPMS Mexico to see their role as part of a global movement, leading to discussions for formal affiliation with WRA and creating opportunities for collaboration on global campaigns such as What Women Want.
As part of the global campaign What Women Want campaign, CPMS Mexico mobilized 133,427 women and girls to share their top priority for their own healthcare. Now, CPMS Mexico is using women’s direct demands to achieve the change they want to see in their healthcare and rights. Building on the global What Women Want advocacy agenda, CPMS Mexico is developing an actionable advocacy agenda specific to the demands from Mexico to make women’s and girls’ demands a reality.
“We are delighted to officially welcome CPMS Mexico to the White Ribbon Alliance family of advocates. Their deep expertise in midwifery – a key driver of reproductive and maternal health outcomes – coupled with a strong national network of committed partners across Mexico, will be instrumental to advancing reproductive, maternal and newborn health and rights nationally and globally. By joining forces, we look forward to mutual learning, growth and powerful partnerships across the Global Alliance,” said White Ribbon Alliance CEO, Betsy McCallon.
