Washington, DC, June 2, 2020 –

Since the unconscionable murder of George Floyd from police brutality in Minneapolis, Minnesota, we at White Ribbon Alliance have been deeply saddened and angered at this latest act of racial injustice plaguing the United States and the world. As an organization that for more than 20 years has advocated for the reproductive and maternal health and rights of all women and girls, but especially those most marginalized, White Ribbon Alliance unites in solidarity with those calling for and end to racial injustice in all forms worldwide. We also recognize that ours and others’ efforts to combat racial inequality have simply not gone far enough.

Since our founding 20 years ago, White Ribbon Alliance globally has focused on addressing inequalities that disproportionately devalue the lives of girls and women, the poor, ethnic minorities and people of color. As the convener of the Global Respectful Maternity Care Council, White Ribbon Alliance has called out disrespect and abuse during pregnancy and childbirth, which is all too common in communities of color. Black mothers are three to four times more likely to die during childbirth in the United States than their white counterparts, in large part due to deep-seeded racism that infects so many of our social systems, including healthcare.

White Ribbon Alliance created its global strategy to directly contribute to health targets under Sustainable Development Goal 3, including reducing global maternal mortality, ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under five, and ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services. We do this by supporting powerful advocates to hold governments accountable so that the voices and lived experiences of the most marginalized drive health policies and practices. We have recently seen an intentional undermining of sexual and reproductive health and rights by the U.S. government and others and we have stood against this; we cannot stand in silence while governments perpetuate racism and violence.

White Ribbon Alliance is committed to strengthening our work for a more just, equitable, and inclusive movement for health and rights that unites with all movements for social justice to affirm and ensure the rights of all people. In addition to our strategic approaches that elevates voices often left out, we are actively working to integrate diversity, equity and inclusion more effectively throughout all of our operations, governance, leadership and programmatic work. We must be better. We must stand together until we have a just and peaceful world for all.
