White Ribbon Alliance Global Secretariat Institutes Mandatory Telework to Help Stem the Impact of COVID-19

Mar 16, 2020 | Global Secretariat, Press Release

Washington, DC, March 16, 2020, – Effective immediately, White Ribbon Alliance is instituting mandatory telework for its Global Secretariat staff and suspending any domestic or international travel, through March 27, with the possibility to extend.

Like many of our partners, White Ribbon Alliance is grappling with appropriate policies and procedures in an unprecedented time. Our decision and operating guidelines were guided by the following principles:

  1. The health and well-being of our staff and their families comes first,
  2. We will do our part as responsible global citizens to minimize the spread of COVID-19 by practicing social distancing and helping to flatten the curve,
  3. No staff member should be penalized for having to care for their children or sick relatives because of the extraordinary impact of the coronavirus, and
  4. We will do all we can feasibly to support the vital work we do for the most marginalized populations, who will bear the disproportionate impact of this crisis around the world, while also appropriately amending plans and remaining flexible.

We are in close contact with White Ribbon Alliance National Alliances across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, which are operating in different contexts. We recognize some national governments have put in place measures significantly restricting movement and gathering, while others are continuing business as usual while taking basic preventative measures, therefore we are not issuing blanket guidance on operations related to sub-awards through the Global Secretariat at this time. We are encouraging National Alliance leaders to be proactive in taking decisions about teleworking, suspending field visits and other precautions and unite in solidarity that our primary concerns are for the health and safety of staff, volunteers, partners and the communities we serve.

We will continue to monitor and amend our polices based on the guidance from all relevant agencies.
