Aakhir Kyon: ''An Ode to Safe Motherhood'' to mark Mother's Day in India 2012

To mark the mother's day this year, the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, India is undertaking a web-launch of the special song on safe motherhood composed by renowned classical singer Shubha Mudgal. Shubha Mudgal specially composed single "Aakhir Kyon: An Ode to Safe Motherhood" dedicated to all pregnant mothers for their well being.

This song is also in memory of the lives lost in giving birth.The lyrics of the song are written by noted lyricist Alok Srivastav. The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, India (WRAI) hopes that this song will contribute to the effort of raising awareness to prevent needless deaths at childbirth and pregnancy in the country.

The essence of the song is about motherhood- a joy which makes every women feel complete, a happiness that fulfills from within and an emotion that lives with her always. But many a time, her life is lost in this very process of bringing a child into this world.

A woman dies every 8 minute in India due to pregnancy related causes. This means that India has over 60,000 maternal deaths every year, contributing to almost 20% of global maternal deaths. 70% of these maternal deaths are preventable.It's an irony indeed that one life should be lost in the process of creating another. No woman should die giving birth surviving Childbirth is a fundamental right of every woman. 

The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, India (WRAI) is coalition of individuals and organizations formed to promote increased public awareness on the need to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all women and newborns. The white ribbon is dedicated to the memory of all women who have died in pregnancy and childbirth and  symbolizes a collective approach to decreasing maternal mortality and morbidity.
