Engaging the UK Muslim Community in Global Maternal Health Advocacy and Campaignin

This month, while world leaders gather at the United Nations General Assembly, WRA has called on our members to submit stories and photographs that illustrate progess that is being made to maternal and newborn health, as well as the efforts of advocates to hold governments accountable to commitments that have been made to Every Woman, Every Child. This posting comes from WRA Member Organization MADE in Europe.

In March 2011, MADE in Europe developed the At Our Mothers' Feet campaign to educate the UK Muslim community about the issue of global maternal deaths and to inspire this community to take action to make maternal health a priority by doing one of the following:

  • Raising awareness among family and friends in the UK
  • Raising awareness among family and friends in countries with high maternal mortality rates (i.e. using their diaspora links to share learning)
  • Demonstrating their support for Muslim charities to prioritize maternal health in their international programming.

By educating individuals about the global challenges of maternal health, At Our Mothers' Feet is contributing to the growing movement of passionate and informed individuals equipped to press governments to make and uphold commitments to improve maternal health.

In the photo below, At Our Mothers' Feet organized a workshop with more than 45 girls between the ages of 13-16, all part of the Young Muslims network.  This photo was taken during a role play exercise that illuminated various obstacles that girls and women face in accessing maternal health care.
