Burkina Faso

The following key WRA/BF activities took place during Winter 2010:

• Blood donation campaign: the lack of blood is amongst the biggest maternal killers in some parts of Burkina. To address this problem, the WRA Burkina Faso, together with the National Center for Blood Transfusion, hosted a blood donation campaign during the 13th biennial chapter of the international craftsmanship fair of Ouagadougou (Salon International de l’Artisanat de Ouagadougou — SIAO) to help pregnant women and wounded people. SIAO attracts a large African market and brings together exhibitors of African art pieces and international buyers. The blood donation campaign was an opportunity to raise awareness both of the needs of pregnant women and of the White Ribbon Alliance and its goals.
• Following SIAO, this same activity was carried out of the ARBOLE Departmental High School during which the National Center for Transfusion was able to collect about one hundred pockets of blood. The students were very happy to mobilize and play a part in this noble action: giving blood to save lives.

• December 11, 2010 marked the 50th anniversary of the Independence of Burkina. To celebrate this, the Koupèla section of the Alliance organized a parade and a viewing of some of the Alliance’s films. The Alliance team from Koupèla also hosted a booth where people could collect information on the Alliance and how to become a member.
• December 11 also marked the creation of a new student club for Safe Motherhood at the ARBOLE Departmental High School. This club aims to raise awareness on reproductive health within the school population. It has already hosted a blood donation campaign and the students are enthusiastic about participating in the “Dreams for My Daughter” project.
• The artist and Ambassador Djata Ilebou, who passed away last October, received a posthumous award during the National Cultural Week in Burkina. She was considered the best female voice in music from Burkina.

Ce trimestre a connu la réalisation de quelques activités au sein de l’ARB-Burkina dont les plus saillantes sont les suivantes:

• La campagne de collecte de sang : le manque de sang est l’une des causes majeures de la mortalité maternelle dans certaines localités du Burkina. C’est pour faire face à ce problème que l’Alliance du Ruban Blanc du Burkina, en collaboration avec le Centre National de la Transfusion Sanguine, a organisé une collecte de sang lors de la 13e édition biennale du Salon International de l’Artisanat de Ouagadougou (SIAO), pour venir en aide aux femmes enceintes et aux personnes accidentées. Le SIAO est un grand marché africain qui rassemble aussi bien des exposants d’objets d’art africain que des acheteurs internationaux.
• Après le SIAO, cette même activité a été menée au Lycée Départemental de ARBOLE ou le Centre National de Transfusion sanguine a pu collecter une centaine de poches de sang. Ce fut une grande mobilisation de la part des élèves qui étaient contents de poser cet acte noble: celui de donner son sang pour sauver des vies.
• Le 11 décembre 2010 a marqué le 50e anniversaire de l’indépendance du Burkina. A cet effet, la section de l’Alliance de Koupèla a participé à la célébration du cinquantenaire de l’Indépendance par une parade et une projection de film de l’Alliance. L’équipe de l’Alliance de Koupèla a aussi animé un stand où les gens pouvaient avoir des informations sur l’Alliance et y adhérer.

• Le 11 décembre a aussi vu la formation d’un club scolaire pour la Maternité à Moindre Risque au Lycée Départemental de ARBOLE. Ce club permettra de sensibiliser les jeunes scolaires sur la santé reproductive. Ce Club a déjà organisé une collecte de sang et les élèves sont enthousiasmes de participer au projet « Rêves pour ma Fille ». 
• L’artiste et ambassadrice Djata Ilebou décédée en Octobre dernier a été décorée à titre posthume à l’occasion de la semaine Nationale de la Culture au Burkina. Elle a été considérée la meilleure voix féminine dans la musique burkinabé. En plus de cette décoration, des lieux publics portent déjà son nom.
