Narrative

White Ribbon Alliance has been a passionate and powerful advocate in a task of historic importance – to end the needless deaths of girls and women in pregnancy and childbirth around the world. Thanks to our work it is no longer  true to say that maternal mortality is a hidden issue; our volunteer members across Africa and Asia have joined with our influential supporters in the Americas and Europe to make sure that the voices of women and their families are now heard by those with power to change policies and save lives.

In the past decade, White Ribbon Alliance has

  • Brought the issue of maternal mortality to the top of the international agenda
  • Played a leading role in ensuring $70 billion  in commitments to women’s and children’s health from the international community, national governments and corporates
  • Made sure the voices of communities are heard on how this money is spent
  • Held leaders and governments to account for their promises
  • Driven a political sea change in many African and Asian countries, so that leaders see saving mothers’ and babies’  lives as a vote winner
  • Driven policy change to make sure more midwives and other health workers are being trained, employed and supported in their work of saving mothers’ and newborns’ lives
  • Made this an issue around which people all around the world, young and old, rich and poor, can join forces
  • Hosted high profile events around the world to attract press and media attention – so that this issue is no longer hidden
