Stories of Mothers Lost is a stunning collection of fabric panels created by men and women to honor the lives of loved ones needlessly lost in 20 countries, from Afghanistan to Uganda and Bangladesh to Burkina Faso, India and Tanzania. Created by the WRA, with support from the United Nations Population Fund, and on display for the first time in October 2007 in London, this traveling exhibition shines a global spotlight on the changes necessary to ensure every woman's right - to live through pregnancy and childbirth, ready to nurture children and contribute to the vitality of her community and nation.
In 2008, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this exhibit was on display at various venues in conjunction with the meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Washington, DC in April, World Economic Forum in South Africa in June, G8 Summit in Japan in July and UN Summit in New York in September.
The tremendous support and enthusiasm of the Stories of Mothers Lost exhibit has led to additional projects in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Nigeria to replicate the project in order to share it with their specific audiences. Additionally, several Stories of Mothers Lost fabric panels have been on display at events, including the May 2009 annual White House Correspondents Garden Brunch dedicated to the Mothers Day Every Day campaign co-hosted by WRA and CARE USA, as well as the Road Shows of the Childbirth Educators Professional Forum, which included a four-city stop in South Africa in September 2009. While the WRA does not have specific future plans to hold a public exhibition of Stories of Mothers Lost, the Global Secretariat is actively searching for new opportunities to bring the unseen reality of maternal death to international audiences, and to shine a spotlight on the changes necessary to ensure every woman's right to live through pregnancy and childbirth.
