White Ribbon Alliance will be joining Women for Women International in a global event which unites women all over the world in showing that they can build the bridges of peace and development for the future.
In London, on the morning of International Women's Day, women and men, girls and boys will gather at Victoria and Embankment Gardens the starting point of our march along the Embankment to the Millennium Bridge, where we will stand in solidarity with women around the world, making a statement about the importance of women for development and the need to invest in women to this end.
The Millennium Bridge will be displaying white banners with images of peace and development made by women participating in the campaign. At 12:00 all participants of the march join hands on By joining this event women will be standing alongside women as they gather on bridges in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Iraq, Sudan, and Nigeria - all saying no to war and yes to peace, development and hope.
In the evening 800 illustrious guests will be treated to a performance, dance, cocktails and canapés in the opulent setting of Haunch of Venison, world-renowned gallery in the heart of the Royal Academy of Art.
In the USA, an event will be held on Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, and supporters are planning events in other towns and cities across the US. University contacts and supporters in schools will also be organising further bridge events.
Women perform 66% of the world's work, produce 50 percent of the food, but earn 10% of the income and own 1% of the property. Statistics such as these clearly show the important yet undervalued place that women hold in the story of development. 70% of the world's poor are women and 75% of the civilians killed in war are women and children. Women are disproportionately both the victims and survivors of conflict. When trying to foster peace and development in war torn regions women are key.
Internationally, UN Security Council Resolution 1325 recognises the important role women play in peace and security and the Millennium Development Goals include specific targets on women's empowerment. Implementation of both is falling short and unless there is greater commitment to acting on internationally agreed standards and investing in women properly, peace, security and development will not be achieved.
